Abstract

A gold miners’ camp in California during the Gold Rush: here, only the law of the strongest prevails. Minnie’s bar becomes a refuge for a society without fixed social norms. When Minnie falls in love with the bandit Johnson, the fragile order finally begins to crumble. In her staging of Giacomo Puccini’s Wild West opera, director Lydia Steier creates the portrait of a community shaped by isolation and violence, in which the spiral of brutality continues to turn inexorably. Marco Armiliato conducts the richly coloured score. Anja Kampe, Jonas Kaufmann and Tomasz Konieczny appear in the leading roles.
