Abstract

Power, control and destructive greed – and a love that overcomes guilt and death – stand at the centre of this late-Romantic triptych. This evening places the three one-act operas by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov into a compelling field of tension with one another. Dmitri Tcherniakov, a master of radical de-romanticisation, stages an unflinching study of human abysses. Gianandrea Noseda conducts these three works, which are rarely performed together.
