New Year's Eve

The Zurich Opera House will be saying farewell to 2013 with particular panache: This year’s New Year’s Eve Gala is devoted to dance. In suitably festive surrounds, the full ensembles of the Zurich Ballet and the Junior Ballet will be presenting highlights of the classical and modern ballet repertoire. And to cap what is sure to be an unforgettable evening, the entire performance will be accompanied by the Philharmonia Zurich conducted by Rossen Milanov.

Zurich premieres, world premieres and ballet classics followed by a grand dance finale: The Zurich Opera House’s 2013/14 New Year’s Eve Gala offers a unique pot-pourri of dance. The wide and varied programme includes such firm audience favourites as Yen Han, Katja Wünsche, Viktorina Kapitonova, William Moore, Filipe Portugal and Arman Grigoryan in excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, Leonce und Lena and Swan Lake, while the Zurich Ballet and Junior Ballet will perform further choreographies by Christian Spuck, Heinz Spoerli, Ben van Cauwenbergh, Douglas Lee, Marco Goecke, Marius Petipa and Itzik Galili.

The wonderfully festive surrounds will provide the finest stage, too, for Switzerland’s first-ever performance of the cheeky, comical and world-famous Grand Pas de Deux by Christian Spuck. Dancer Filipe Portugal has even created his own new choreography for Liebestod from Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde specially for the occasion; and we are truly delighted that soprano Anja Kampe will be accompanying this world-premiere event. Lovers of classical ballet will be amply catered for, too: as well as Swan Lake and Coppélia, the finale from Heinz Spoerli’s Midsummer Night’s Dream is also on the programme.

Our New Year’s Eve Gala can also be combined with a multi-course dinner or the New Year’s Party on the Opera House stage.

New Year’s Eve Gala and dinner

Your New Year’s Eve celebrations will begin with a cocktail reception in the Opera House foyer. And you can look forward later on to a delightful Belcanto dinner in the party surroundings of the specially-decorated Studio Stage. For a glimpse at the menu, click here. After the gala dance performance we’ll serve you a select dessert and a midnight champagne on the Studio Stage; and then it’s up to the Opera House balcony for an incomparable view of the traditional firework display above Lake Zurich. You’re also warmly invited to the subsequent New Year’s Party to ring-in 2014 together with the Zurich Ballet.

New Year’s Eve Gala and onstage party

After the gala ballet performance, come and join us onstage for our New Year’s Party, with all drinks (white wine, red wine, beer, mineral water, midnight champagne) included. Enjoy the fabulous lake fireworks from the Opera House balcony, and then dance away the first few hours of 2014 on the main Opera House stage with music by The Dramaqueens and the dancers of the Zurich Ballet.
