Introductory matinee
«Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern»

We offer introductory matinees for every new production: In conversation with dramaturges, a cast of conductors, directors, and stage and costume designers explain their view of the pieces they’re working on. Scheduled on a Sunday morning a week or two before a premiere, the matinees give you a direct view into the special features of the production.

Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern is one of the most important musical theater works of the last fifty years. Helmut Lachenmann subtitled his composition, which premiered in 1997 and is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale, «Music with pictures.» Ballet director Christian Spuck dedicated himself to this groundbreaking, boundary-pushing work, and, for its Swiss premiere, brings it to the stage for the first time ever as a ballet. For the introductory matinee, Helmut Lachenmann and Christian Spuck delve into the story of this spectacular new production: as the production mobilizes the entire Opernhaus, it promises an artistic adventure like no other.
