Abstract
This revival of Richard Wagner’s Parsifal boasts an excellent cast: The lead role is sung by Stefan Vinke, who has made a name for himself internationally as Siegfried in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen; the role he sang besides others at the Opera Australia Melbourne, at the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and with great success at the Bayreuth Festival. He made his debut as Parsifal at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and has also sung the role at Oper Leipzig as well as at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Furthermore, audiences can experience Nina Stemme, one of today’s most important Wagner singers, as Kundry, and look forward to the bass voice of Christof Fischesser in the role of Gurnemanz. Wagner’s valedictory work will be conducted by Simone Young, who will again be at the rostrum of the Philharmonia Zurich following her successful début at Zurich Opera House with Lohengrin during the 2014/15 season. According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Claus Guth’s production is “one of the most moving things said about Parsifal in recent years.” In their 2011 production, Guth and his set and costume designer Christian Schmidt interpret the piece outside the context of the time in which it was written. The Knights of the Grail’s search for a redeemer is correlated with the disorientation and quest for meaning in the years following the First World War, and ultimately reflects upon the events that led to the coup d’état in Germany in 1933.
