Alexander Borodin: Quintet in F minor for two violins, viola and two cellos
Alexander Glasunow: Quintet in A major for two violins, viola and two cellos, op. 39

Duration approx. 1 H.
The first chamber concert of this season takes us to Russia. Alexander Borodin, from whom the F Minor Quintet for two violins, viola and two cellos (1859/60) is heard, belonged to the "Mächtige Häuflein" - a group of composers who strove for an independent Russian music free from Western tradition. Like his colleagues in this circle, Borodin was a musical autodidact, his main profession being a doctor and professor of chemistry in St. Petersburg. Alexander Glazunov's career took a more conventional course. He became a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory at an early age. In his String Quintet in A major op. 39 (1892) he succeeded in synthesizing the pithy style of the "Mighty heap" with the elegant classicism of a Tchaikovsky.

The brunch concerts take place on Sundays at 11.15 a.m., the lunch concerts on Mondays at 12.00 p.m. in the Hall of Mirrors of the Opera House and cost CHF 20 each (Legi: CHF 18).

If desired, the concerts can be combined with a culinary offering in the 'Bernadette' Restaurant: on Sunday you can enjoy the 'Bernadette' Brunch for an additional CHF 40, and on Monday an à la carte lunch. We kindly ask you to reserve a table for both offers at Bernadette' at www.bernadette.ch.
