Serenade

Choreography by George Balanchine

Choreography and assistant direction:
George Balanchine

George Balanchine

George Balanchine (born Georgi Balanchivadze) was born in St. Petersburg in 1904, the son of a Georgian composer. He was trained as a dancer at the Imperial Ballet Academy and, after graduating in 1921, began his first professional engagement. At the same time, he studied piano and composition for three years at the conservatory in his hometown. He began creating his own choreographies as early as 1920. In 1924, during a tour of Germany with the Soviet State Dancers, he took the opportunity to introduce himself to Serge Diaghilev, who engaged him as a dancer and choreographer for his "Ballets Russes". This also marked the beginning of his intensive collaboration and friendship with Igor Stravinsky. After Diaghilev’s death in 1929, Balanchine worked sporadically in London, Copenhagen, Monte Carlo and Paris and founded his company "Les Ballets 1933". At the invitation of Lincoln Kirstein, he moved to New York in August 1933 and became director of the newly founded "School of American Ballet", from whose students he assembled his first American company, which made its New York debut in 1935 as the "American Ballet". Between 1935 and 1951, Balanchine occasionally choreographed for Broadway and for several Hollywood films, but the main focus of his work was the "Ballet Society", of which he was a co-founder. In 1948, it was transformed into the "New York City Ballet" and moved into the City Center. Here Balanchine created his most important choreographies, with which he also toured Europe. In 1962, he traveled to the Soviet Union for the first time with the New York City Ballet. In spring 1964, Balanchine and his company moved into the New York State Theater, which had been built according to his wishes. George Balanchine died in New York in 1983. Today, his choreographies are managed worldwide by the Balanchine Trust.

She received her dance training in Cambridge and at the Royal Ballet School in London. Between 1994 and 1999, she danced with Zurich Ballet, the Ballet of Lucerne Theatre, and Konzert Theater Bern. From 2002 to 2006, she was an Associate Artist at the Royal Opera House in London, and from 2007 to 2013 she served as Ballet Director at Konzert Theater Bern.

For many years highly successful as a freelance choreographer, Cathy Marston has been invited by numerous renowned international companies and institutions. She has created works for The Royal Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, English National Ballet, Northern Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet, Ballet Black, the National Ballet of Cuba, as well as for Opera Australia and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In recent years, she has worked increasingly in the United States, including with San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, and The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago.

In her choreographic works, she brings major literary sources to life through dance and approaches significant historical figures in unusual and original ways. She has celebrated major successes with her ballet adaptations of "Mrs. Robinson" (Charles Webb), "Snowblind" (based on Ethan Frome), "Jane Eyre" (Charlotte Brontë), and "Of Mice and Men" (John Steinbeck). Distinctive perspectives also characterize her biographically inspired works "The Cellist", "Victoria", and "Hexenhatz". Cathy Marston has received numerous awards for her choreographic achievements, including a South Bank Sky Arts Award and the British National Dance Award. In 2020, the International Institute for Dance and Theatre honored her with an award for excellence in international dance.

A highlight of her first season as Director of Zurich Ballet was the 2024 world premiere of "Atonement", based on the novel of the same name by Ian McEwan (a co-production with The Joffrey Ballet). In addition, her works "The Cellist" and "Snowblind" were presented in Zurich. In the previous season, her Clara Schumann ballet "Clara" premiered. In 2026, she will choreograph "Romeo and Juliet" for Zurich Ballet.

Abstract

Famous orchestral scores by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Benjamin Britten, and Bohuslav Martinů form the musical centerpiece of this three-part ballet evening. “See the music, hear the dance” – that was the motto of George Balanchine, the founder of the New York City Ballet and master of neoclassicism. For him, dance was visual music and was meant to make the audience hear it in a new and different way. With pure beauty and perfectly staged formations of dancers, Balanchine’s legendary piece «Serenade» overwhelms. For the London Royal Ballet, Cathy Marston’s choreography «Against the Tide» was created. For this, in 2025 she engaged with Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto and the background of its creation. For the first time, the Zurich Ballet is performing a piece by Justin Peck.
