Workshop series "Modern Times – Puccini and Chaplin in Comparison"

For young people aged 16 and above

Giacomo Puccini occasionally gave his operas an almost cinematic pull, while Charlie Chaplin masterfully employed operatic gestures in his films. Both were among the first global superstars of their respective fields—boundary-crossers, uncompromising perfectionists and masters of great emotion, from laughter to tears. Their characteristic figures, such as tramps, bohemians and gold prospectors, as well as their fateful female protagonists, were inspired by the social realities of the early modern era. Having achieved great wealth through their work, both were fascinated by luxury, progress and new beginnings.

This workshop series invites participants to explore selected works by Puccini and Chaplin through a comparative lens, examine them within the context of their time, and discover opera and film from a fresh perspective.
