Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich meets Philharmonia Zürich

Tribute to Sergei Rachmaninoff

The two Zurich conductors Gianandrea Noseda and Paavo Järvi are friends. They do not see any competition in their parallel work at the Opera House and the Tonhalle, but rather an occasion for intense exchange, but also for a bit of friendly rivalry. Now they are reaffirming their artistic friendship and swapping positions: Paavo Järvi will conduct the Philharmonia Zurich and Gianandrea Noseda the Tonhalle Orchestra. Programmatically, it should be more than just a gesture: the two orchestra heads are teaming up for a Rachmaninoff cycle to mark the 150th birthday of the composer, who regularly composed at his villa on Switzerland's Lake Lucerne from 1930 onward. The four orchestral concerts spread over the calendar year 2023 will focus on Rachmaninoff's monumental piano concertos. The soloists in this cycle are internationally acclaimed stars such as Yuja Wang and Yefim Bronfman.

«I am looking forward to celebrating Rachmaninoff's 150th birthday together with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and with Paavo Järvi, a colleague and friend I admire very much. Placing Sergei Rachmaninoff's music at the center of a collaboration between Zurich's two most important orchestras will show that by working together we can achieve a great artistic result and bring people together in the name of music, beauty and respect.»

«It is a happy coincidence that Gianandrea Noseda and I both ended up in Zurich; we have known and liked each other for a long time. And we love Rachmaninoff: I grew up with Russian music as an Estonian, Gianandrea worked in St. Petersburg for a long time. So Rachmaninoff's 150th birthday is a very nice opportunity for a friendly collaboration between Tonhalle Zurich and Zurich Opera House.»
