Stepping into the unknown - Christian Spuck's Journey to Verdi's Requiem
A documentary film by Jürg Gautschi
Take a look behind the scenes of the Messa da Requiem with the documentary film Schritt ins Unbekannte ["Stepping into the unknown"], which accompanies Christian Spuck on his daring journey from conception to premiere of the grand co-production at the Opernhaus Zürich.
With Messa da Requiem, Christian Spuck brought one of Giuseppe Verdi's central works to the stage. First performed in Milan in 1874, this Requiem is still one of the most popular works in the oratorio repertoire today. With his scenic-choreographic interpretation, the Ballett Zürich's Director took on the creation of an unusual interpretation of Verdi's Mass for the Dead with an attempt at the abstract visualization of the music.
The documentary shows the development process of the enormous joint production of the Zurich's opera and ballet: 36 dancers, the large Chor der Oper Zürich, world-class soloists Krassimira Stoyanova, Veronica Simeoni, Francesco Meli, and Georg Zeppenfeld, with the Philharmonia Zürich under the direction of Fabio Luisi accompany Christian Spuck on this journey into the unknown...
A production of Swiss Radio and Television (2017).
Subtitles are available in English as well as in German, French and Japanese.
Documentary film and live recording of Messa da Requiem are also available on DVD.
