Gianandrea Noseda

Gianandrea Noseda has been General Music Director of Zurich Opera House since the 2021/22 season. He is also Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, he became Music Director of the newly founded Tsinandali Festival and the Georgian Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra. From 2007 to 2018, Noseda served as General Music Director of the Teatro Regio di Torino, artistically reshaping the opera house during this period. Noseda has conducted the world's leading orchestras (Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic) as well as at the most prestigious opera houses (La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House) and festivals (BBC Proms, Edinburgh, Salzburg and Verbier). He has held leading positions with the BBC Philharmonic (Chief Conductor), Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (Principal Guest Conductor), Mariinsky Theatre (Principal Guest Conductor) and Stresa Festival (Artistic Director). His discography comprises more than 80 CDs – the "Musica Italiana" project, featuring neglected 20th-century Italian repertoire, holds a special place. Born in Milan, Noseda is a Commendatore al Merito della Repubblica Italiana and received the City of Milan's Order of Merit in 2024. In 2015, he was honoured as "Musical America's Conductor of the Year", named "Conductor of the Year" at the International Opera Awards in 2016 and received the Puccini Prize in 2023. In the same year, the Oper!Awards named Noseda "Best Conductor", particularly highlighting his interpretations of the first two operas of the "Ring" cycle at Zurich Opera House.

Aurélien Pascal

Cellist Aurélien Pascal studied with Philippe Muller at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris and with Frans Helmerson and Gary Hoffman at the Kronberg Academy. His encounters with János Starker and Gautier Capuçon were also formative. In 2023, he was named Instrumental Revelation of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique. He also won second prize at the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki in 2013, first prize and the Audience Prize at the Emanuel Feuermann Competition in Berlin in 2014, and fourth prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2017. Aurélien Pascal performs with orchestras including the Orchestre de Paris, the philharmonic orchestras of Monte-Carlo, Helsinki and Hangzhou, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Kammerakademie Potsdam, collaborating with conductors such as Christoph Poppen, András Schiff, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Lawrence Foster, Stanislav Kochanovsky and Corinna Niemeyer. His chamber music partners include Alexandre Kantorow, Liya Petrova, Renaud Capuçon, Augustin Dumay, Tabea Zimmermann, Pavel Kolesnikov, Clara-Jumi Kang and Emmanuel Pahud. In Trio Pascal, he performs alongside violinist Alexandre Pascal and pianist Denis Pascal. He appears at festivals such as La Roque d’Anthéron, the Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, La Folle Journée and the Marvão International Music Festival. His discography includes Danzi’s Cello Concerto with the Munich Chamber Orchestra under Howard Griffiths, as well as the album "All’Ungarese" with pianist Paloma Kouider. He plays a French cello made by Adolphe Gand in 1850.

Abstract

Sergei Prokofiev often collected his musical material long before incorporating it into his compositions. For his Third Symphony, for example, he used numerous themes from his opera "The Fiery Angel", which was not performed during his lifetime. Prokofiev emphasised that the plot of the opera was irrelevant to the symphony. Nevertheless, the dark atmosphere of this drama of madness, invocation and inquisition is clearly reflected in the Symphony in C minor. The Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra is also based on musical material from Prokofiev’s earlier Cello Concerto, which he reworked at the suggestion of cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. As part of our Prokofiev cycle, Aurélien Pascal performs this final concertante work by Prokofiev. Gianandrea Noseda conducts Prokofiev’s works as well as "core", a piece composed in 2002 by Swiss composer Dieter Ammann, at the helm of the Orchestra of the Zurich Opera House.
