Abstract

The English composer and musician William Lawes was active at the court of King Charles I. In 1645, he fell in the course of the English Civil War, and his music was forgotten during the Puritan dictatorship of Oliver Cromwell. Today, his Royal Consorts in particular are being performed again, highly original chamber music works for gamba ensembles. Daniel Kagerer and Yuko Arakaki (violins), Christof Mohr (viola da gamba), Dieter Lange (bass gamba) and Reymond Huguenin Dumittan (theorbo) play works by William Lawes as well as his contemporaries Matthew Locke and Charles Coleman in the last brunch / lunch concert of this season.

For our series of brunch and lunch concerts, musicians of the Philharmonia Zürich present work trouvailles in various constellations, familiar pieces in unusual arrangements, and aural adventures the likes of which you’ve never heard before. These chamber concerts take place in the relaxed yet intimate atmosphere of the magnificent Opernhaus Spiegelsaal. Afterwards, we look forward to welcoming you to the new Bernadette Restaurant for brunch or lunch à la carte. Reserve your table with a magnificent view of the glittering Lake Zurich and the lively Sechseläutenplatz at +41 44 268 64 64 or online at www.bernadette.ch.
