Fabio Luisi comes from Genoa. The former General Music Director of the Zurich Opera House (2012–2021) is Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Chief Conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and Chief Conductor of the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo. He is also Music Director of the Valle d'Itria Festival in Apulia and Honorary Conductor of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra in Turin. Previously, he held important positions at orchestras and opera houses, including the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He regularly appears as a guest conductor with, among others, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic, and leads productions at the Bavarian State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Salzburg Festival, and the Vienna State Opera, among others. At the Zurich Opera House, he conducted, among others, the new productions of three Bellini operas as well as "Rigoletto," "Fidelio," "Wozzeck," "The Land of Smiles," and Verdi's "Requiem Mass." An extensive discography complements his artistic work. At the Zurich Opera House, he founded the label "Philharmonia Records" of the Philharmonia Zurich (Orchestra of the Zurich Opera). Fabio Luisi, who comes from Genoa, studied at the Conservatorio Niccolò Paganini in his hometown and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. His awards include the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, the Italian Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana, the Commendatore della Stella d’Italia, the Grifo d’Oro of Genoa, the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, and an honorary doctorate from St. Bonaventure University in New York. Off the podium, he is also a composer and perfumer, producing his creations for his own company.

The Opernhaus Zürich mourns the death of Nello Santi, who died on 6 February 2020 at the age of 88. Maestro Santi was associated with the Opernhaus for over 60 years, longer than any other artist in the history of the house. Since making his debut at the opera house in 1958 with Giuseppe Verdi's La forza del destino, the charismatic, humorous, and passionate conductor had regularly appeared at the podium of our orchestra, delievering the audience unforgettable evenings at the opera.
In memory of Maestro Santi, General Music Director Fabio Luisi will conduct Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem on 28 March 2020. The solo parts will be sung by Hibla Gerzmava, Yulia Matochkina, Benjamin Bernheim, and Georg Zeppenfeld.

Ernst Raffelsberger
Ernst Raffelsberger comes from Gmunden, Upper Austria. He studied music education and church music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, as well as choral conducting at the Mozarteum Salzburg. From 1983 to 1986, he was Kapellmeister of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. During this time, he conducted the ensemble in Vienna and on tours through Europe, South Africa, Canada, and the USA. From 1986, Ernst Raffelsberger was choral director and Kapellmeister at the Landestheater Salzburg (participating in the Salzburg Mozart Week and the Salzburg Festival). In 1989, he moved as choral director and Kapellmeister to the Theater in Freiburg/Breisgau. Since autumn 1993, Ernst Raffelsberger has been engaged as choral director at the Zurich Opera House. Here, he has overseen approximately 150 premieres and countless revivals and has collaborated with many renowned conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Riccardo Chailly, Teodor Currentzis, Christoph von Dohnányi, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Zubin Mehta, Gianandrea Noseda, and Franz Welser-Möst. Guest performances with the Zurich Opera House have taken him to Vienna, London, Paris, and Tokyo. From the summer of 2012, he also began a 10-year tenure as choral director of the Vienna State Opera Chorus for the Salzburg Festival. This led to successful collaborations with Riccardo Muti, Mariss Jansons, and Sir Simon Rattle, among others. After Ernst Raffelsberger concluded this work with the 2021 festival season, he has, since 2025, been responsible once again, at Maestro Muti’s request, for choral preparation for his festival concerts in Salzburg. Numerous CD and DVD recordings document his work in both Zurich and Salzburg.

Hibla Gerzmava studierte Gesang am staatlichen Konservatorium in Moskau und gewann 1994 beim Tschaikowski-Wettbewerb den Grand Prix. Seit 1995 tritt sie als Solistin für das Moskauer Stanislawski- und das Nemirowitsch-Dantschenko-Theater auf. Für ihre Interpretationen der Titelpartie in Médée sowie als Lucia di Lammermoor am selben Haus wurde sie jeweils mit einer «Goldene Maske» ausgezeichnet. Heute gastiert die Sopranistin an den grossen Opernhäusern Europas: Am Royal Opera House in London sang sie u.a. Donna Anna, Mimì, Amelia (Simon Boccanegra), Tatjana (Eugen Onegin) und Liù (Turandot), an der Opéra Bastille war sie als Elisabeth (Don Carlos) und im Palais Garnier als Vitellia (La clemenza di Tito) zu erleben, an der Wiener Staatsoper gastierte sie ebenfalls als Vitellia sowie als Donna Anna, an der Metropolitan Opera in New York verkörperte sie Donna Anna, Liù, Mimì, Desdemona (Otello) sowie Antonia und Stella (Les Contes d’Hoffmann). Ebenfalls als Mimì gab sie ihr Hausdebüt an der Bayerischen Staatsoper. 2016/17 debütierte sie an der Semperoper Dresden als Desdemona, am Bolschoi-Theater in Moskau als Violetta und an der Scala di Milano in der Titelpartie von Anna Bolena. In der aktuellen Spielzeit war die Sopranistin bisher u.a. als Elisabeth an der Bastille und am Bolschoi-Theater in Moskau zu erleben, sang Mimì und Lucia di Lammermoor am Moskauer Stanislawski-Theater und kehrte als Desdemona nach Dresden zurück. Konzertengagements führten sie u.a. in die Carnegie Hall, an die BBC Proms, zu den Olympischen Winterspielen in Sotschi und ans Edinburgh International Festival.
Yulia Matochkina
Yulia Matochkina won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2015. She is one of the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and has established herself as one of Russia’s most impressive mezzo-sopranos. At the Mariinsky Theatre, she has appeared in roles such as Amneris (Aida), Eboli (Don Carlo), Principessa di Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur), Didon (Les Troyens), Dalila (Samson et Dalila), Venus (Tannhäuser), and Kundry (Parsifal). In 2019, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in the role of Federica in a concert performance of Verdi’s Luisa Miller. Past engagements have also included Roméo et Juliette at the Berlioz Festival in La Côte-Saint-André, as well as Carmen and Polina (The Queen of Spades) at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. She performed Marguerite (La Damnation de Faust) at the Berlioz Festival, Venus (Tannhäuser) in Los Angeles, Carmen at the Bolshoi Theatre, Eboli (Don Carlo) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Maddalena (Rigoletto) at the Met in New York, Marfa (Khovanshchina) at the Opéra de Paris, Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera) at La Scala in Milan, and Ortrud (Lohengrin) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Upcoming engagements include Azucena (Il trovatore) and Venus (Tannhäuser) in Munich, as well as Amneris (Aida) in Tokyo.
Benjamin Bernheim
Benjamin Bernheim studied with Gary Magby in Lausanne and was a member of the International Opera Studio and later of the ensemble at the Zurich Opera House. The French tenor has since established himself as a regular guest at the most prestigious opera houses, including the Opéra de Paris, the Vienna and Berlin State Operas, and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. In 2020, he was named "Opera Singer of the Year" at the Les Victoires de la Musique Awards and "Musical Personality of the Year" by the French Critics’ Association. That same year, his debut album received both a "Diapason d’Or" and a "Choc de Classica".
Highlights of his career to date include the title role in Faust (Opéra national de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and Latvian National Opera), Roméo in Roméo et Juliette (Opéra national de Paris and Zurich Opera House), Rodolfo in La bohème (Opéra national de Paris, Zurich Opera House, Royal Opera House, Berlin State Opera, and Vienna State Opera), Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor (Zurich Opera House, Vienna State Opera, and Salzburg Festival), and Alfredo in La traviata (Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House, Zurich Opera House, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opéra national de Bordeaux, and Berlin State Opera).
He has also given song recitals at the Salzburg Festival, the Verbier Festival, La Grange au Lac, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Philharmonie de Luxembourg, and the Wiener Konzerthaus. Georg Zeppenfeld
Georg Zeppenfeld stammt aus dem westfälischen Attendorn und absolvierte zunächst ein Lehramtsstudium mit den Fächern Musik und Germanistik. An den Musikhochschulen in Detmold und Köln erhielt er parallel dazu seine Ausbildung in Konzert- und Operngesang, abschliessend bei Hans Sotin. Nach ersten Festengagements in Münster und Bonn wurde er 2001 von der Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden verpflichtet, die bis heute seine künstlerische Heimat ist. Darüber hinaus gastiert er an nahezu allen grossen Opernhäusern Europas und der Vereinigten Staaten sowie an den weltweit wichtigsten Konzertorten. Sein Repertoire umfasst u. a. die grossen Verdi- und Wagnerpartien seines Fachs; eine Schlüsselrolle ist Sarastro, den er unter Claudio Abbado in Baden-Baden, an der Dresdner Semperoper, San Francisco Opera, New Yorker Met, Wiener Staatsoper, Salzburger Festspiele (unter Harnoncourt), Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, Opernhaus Zürich und der Bayerischen Staatsoper sang. Seit 2010 ist er regelmässig Gast bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. 2019 debütierte er als Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg bei den Salzburger Osterfestspielen unter Christian Thielemann.
