Abstract
At the center of Gaetano Donizetti’s «Melodramma giocoso» is the shy young farmer boy Nemorino, who, under the influence of the legend of Tristan and Isolde, purchases a love potion from the quack Dulcamara. Nemorino hopes to use it to win the love of Adina – but she prefers the dashing captain Belcore. A tear or two will be shed before all can end well. With the setting of this sincere love story, Donizetti introduced a new musical inflection into the opera buffa: the lyrical cantilena, which tells of despair and melancholy. And nowhere is it more insistent than in the now-famous romanza «Una furtiva lagrima». Appearing in this revival production as Nemorino is our ensemble member Mauro Peter. Erwin Schrott returns to the Opernhaus to sing Dulcamara, and the young Armenian soprano Mané Galoyan makes her house debut as Adina.
