Abstract

The tenor Piotr Beczała enjoyed great success as Prince Sou-Chong in the 2017 operetta Das Land des Lächelns (The Land of Smiles), and the criticism was almost effusive: the NZZ praised him for his «almost inexhaustible repertoire of expressive values» in its review of the premiere. From 21 June, Piotr Beczała will once again be heard in one of his signature roles at Opernhaus Zürich, as Land des Lächelns will then return to the repertoire. Before that, he will give a recital; the programme includes Russian songs by Piotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninov as well as works by Mieczysław Karłowicz, Robert Schumann and Edvard Grieg. Piotr Beczała will be accompanied on the piano by his long-time piano partner Helmut Deutsch.
