Carlo Rizzi comes from Milan and began his international conducting career as the winner of the first Toscanini Competition. From 1992 to 2001 and again from 2005, he was Music Director of the Welsh National Opera and has held the title of Conductor Laureate there since 2015. Since 1996, Carlo Rizzi has been a regular guest at the Edinburgh Festival and since 2019 Music Director of Opera Rara, with which he is dedicated to neglected operatic repertoire. Long-standing collaborations also connect him, among others, with La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opéra national de Paris, the Teatro Real Madrid, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the New National Theatre in Tokyo and La Monnaie in Brussels. On the concert podium, he has appeared, among others, with the London Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan. More recent conducting engagements in the field of opera include "La fiamma" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, "Rigoletto" and "Turandot" at the Vienna State Opera, "La bohème" at the Bavarian State Opera Munich, "Il trittico" in Paris, "Il trovatore" in London as well as "Turandot" and "Madama Butterfly" at the Met. His discography includes the operas "Faust", "Káťa Kabanová", "Rigoletto" and "Un ballo in maschera" at the Welsh National Opera and "La traviata" at the Salzburg Festival as well as recordings with Joyce El-Khoury and Michael Spyres nominated for the Gramophone Award. In 2024, he released Donizetti’s "L’esule di Roma" with Opera Rara and was nominated as "Conductor of the Year" at the International Opera Awards. He is the holder of the Italian honorary title "Grande Ufficiale".
