Abstract
When Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach used the word clavier, he meant all the keyboard instruments of his time, including the harpsichord or fortepiano developed in the 18th century. One of today's most sought-after pianists, equally adept on these historical instruments and the modern grand piano, is Kristian Bezuidenhout. Born in South Africa, he now performs with the most prominent early music ensembles as well as modern symphony orchestras. He has made exemplary recordings of Mozart's solo piano works and is also artistic director of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. Together with the Orchestra La Scintilla, he now performs for the first time at the Zurich Opera House, playing a piano concerto by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach on the harpsichord and Mozart's E-flat major piano concerto Jenamy on the fortepiano. Two symphonic works by Bach's sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian, whose music had a great influence on Mozart, complete the program.
