Abstract
A hardworking tailor sits in his chilly workshop, sewing as best as can. But when a swarm of flies threatens his tasty jam sandwich, he goes on the attack – and kills seven in one blow! Determined to impress the world with this feat of strength, he lays down his needle and thread and sets off across the countryside. Along the way, the scrawny craftsman even manages to convince a giant of his astonishing powers. And then he ends up at the royal palace. The princess therein is convinced that she’s met her prince charming and vows to marry him. But before the king and his advisors will consent to the wedding, our hero (who on the surface is but a tailor) has to survive a few dangerous quests. But how to bring this cast of characters – colossal giants, a wild boar, a unicorn, or a swarm of flies – to the stage?
Young German director and puppetry specialist Kai Anne Schuhmacher created imaginative marionettes for this «small opera after the Brothers Grimm», and made them in collaboration with our workshops. Four singers and puppeteer slip into the roles of the Grimm brothers and the various fairytale characters, bringing them to life. In this operatic delight for children 6 years and older, Austrian composer Wolfgang Mitterer created his own unique musical palette: beguiling electronic music and a double bass accompany the vocal soloists.
