Abstract
The most famous scene in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor is the Mad Scene – one of the most moving scenes in all of opera, which doubles as a vocal and dramatic tour de force for the singer in the title role. The revival series of this production by Tatjana Gürbaca features the Armenian soprano Nina Minasyan taking up this challenge. Her recent turn as the titular Lucia stunned audiences at the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Opéra national de Paris.
«Love, destruction-laden love, without which opera remains cold»: this was the stuff that Donizetti demanded of material for an opera – and it was what he got in spades from Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor. A fragile Lucia has fallen in love with Edgardo, the mortal enemy of her brother Enrico. Edgardo is willing to disregard the longstanding hatred between the two families, but Enrico is enraged when he hears of his sister’s love for Edgardo. Enrico has arranged to marry Lucia off to the wealthy Arturo Bucklaw, hoping to pay off his own debts in the process. Enrico mercilessly pressures his sister until she agrees to marry Arturo. But she is ultimately broken by her unrequited love. As if possessed, she becomes a murderess, stabbing Arturo on their wedding night. Her own death is the only escape possible from a desperately hopeless situation for Lucia.
The young Italian conductor Leonardo Sini leads this revival series from the podium of the Philharmonia Zürich. He is one of the most promising young conductors of his generation. He previously appeared in Zurich for acclaimed performances of Rigoletto.
