Orchestra La Scintilla

Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Idomeneo), William Christie (u.a.

Abstract

Rinaldo is to liberate the city of Jerusalem. Yet the brave crusader becomes ensnared in the fateful web of the Saracen sorceress Armida. While the religious and political conflicts negotiated here remain controversial to this day, in Handel’s opera it is ultimately the boundary-transcending power of love that leads to peace. Not only with such unforgettable arias as "Lascia ch’io pianga", but also with spectacular stage effects, Handel succeeded with his first music theatre work for London in inspiring lasting enthusiasm for Italian opera among audiences. At the Zurich Opera House, Philippe Jaroussky leads a distinguished Baroque ensemble, with Christophe Dumaux, Regula Mühlemann and Jeanine De Bique in the solo roles.
