Christopher Franklin

Christopher Franklin studied conducting at the University of Illinois and at the Peabody Conservatory and received scholarships from the Tanglewood Music Center and the Hochschule für Musik Saarbrücken. At the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, he was awarded the Franco Ferrara Prize and won first prize at the Gino Marinuzzi International Conducting Competition. In Treviso, he won the Bottega-Toti dal Monte Competition and was subsequently appointed assistant to Peter Maag at the Teatro Comunale di Treviso. He has received invitations to, among others, the Teatro Regio di Torino, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the Teatro Comunale di Modena, and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. Since 2024, he has been Chief Conductor of the Minnesota Opera, where he has recently conducted "Thaïs" and "Così fan tutte." He has led concerts, among others, at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Cologne Philharmonic, and the Konzerthaus Dortmund. He maintains a close collaboration with tenor Juan Diego Flórez, with whom he has performed on tour in numerous concert halls. Among his more recent highlights in opera are "Peter Grimes" and "The Turn of the Screw" in Valencia, Donizetti’s "Pia de Tolomei" in Pisa, Livorno, and Lucca, "I puritani" and Rossini’s "Otello" at the Liceu in Barcelona, "Tristan und Isolde" and "La bohème" in Trieste, "Il turco in Italia" in Bologna, "La sonnambula" at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, "Die Fledermaus" in Tokyo, "Hänsel und Gretel" at the San Francisco Opera, as well as "Die Zauberflöte" and "Adriana Lecouvreur" at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie.

Ted Huffman

Ted Huffman was born in New York. He studied at Yale University and participated in the San Francisco Merola Opera Program. The opera "Denis & Katya", created together with Philip Venables (Opera Philadelphia, Dutch National Opera, Music Theatre Wales, Opéra Montpellier, Opera Hannover), won the Fedora Generali Prize in 2019 and the Ivor Novello Award in 2020. With Philip Venables he also developed the opera "4.48 Psychosis" after Sarah Kane, which premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, received the UK Theatre Award for Opera, and was nominated for the Olivier Awards, the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards and the South Bank Awards, as well as "The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions" (among others Factory International Manchester, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Bregenz Festival, Ruhrtriennale). In 2025 he directed the world premiere of Venables’s opera "We Are The Lucky Ones" at Dutch National Opera. Further directing work includes "The Time of Our Singing" at La Monnaie, "Rinaldo" in Frankfurt, "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" at Deutsche Oper Berlin, "Le premier meurtre" at the Opéra de Lille, "Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" at the Royal Danish Theatre, Luke Styles’s "Macbeth" at Glyndebourne, Ana Sokolović’s "Svádba" in Aix, "Les mamelles de Tirésias" among others in Brussels, Amsterdam and at the Aldeburgh Festival, as well as Monteverdi’s "L’incoronazione di Poppea" in Aix and "Street Scene" at the Paris Opéra. The world premiere of Stefan Wirth’s "Das Mädchen mit dem Perlenohrring" at Zurich Opera House was named "Best World Premiere 2022" by Opernwelt. In addition, "Madama Butterfly" (2017) and "Roméo et Juliette" (2023) were produced in Zurich.

Andrew Lieberman

Andrew Lieberman stammt aus Amerika und arbeitet an zahlreichen internationalen Bühnen im Bereich des Musiktheaters, des Sprechtheaters und des Musicals. Im Schauspiel entwarf er u.a. Bühnenbilder für das International Theater Amsterdam, die Royal Shakespeare Company und für diverse Theater am New Yorker Broadway. Er schuf das Bühnenbild für Händels Partenope in der Regie von Christopher Alden an der English National Opera, welches 2009 den «Lawrence Olivier Award» für die beste Opernproduktion gewann. Sein Bühnenbild für Aida wurde 2011 im amerikanischen Pavillon der Prager Quadriennale für Szenografie gezeigt. Mit Ted Huffman arbeitete er u.a. an der Royal Danish Opera für Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno und an der Opera Philadelphia für die Uraufführung von Denis & Katya von Philip Venables zusammen. Letztere Produktion war auch an der Staatsoper Hannover und der Oper Amsterdam zu sehen. Andrew Lieberman ist Preisträger des Princess Grace Award und war von 2008 bis 2019 Leiter der Bühnenbildabteilung an der New Yorker Universität Tisch School of the Arts. Zuletzt gestaltete er die Bühnenbilder zu Braunfels’ Die Vögel an der Opéra National du Rhin, Candide an der Opéra de Lyon, die Zauberflöte an der Oper Frankfurt und für Girl with a Pearl Earring in Zürich. Zu seinen nächsten Produktionen zählt u.a. die Uraufführung von 10 Days in a Madhouse an der Opera Philadelphia.

Annemarie Woods

The Irish costume and set designer Annemarie Woods won the Ring Award in Graz in 2011 together with the British director Sam Brown. In joint productions with Sam Brown she designed, among others, "I Capuleti e i Montecchi" at the Teatro Sociale di Como, "Der Zigeunerbaron" at Stadttheater Klagenfurt, "Sigurd der Drachentöter" at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, "Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the world premiere of Gerald Barry’s opera "The Importance of Being Earnest" at the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy, and "La Cenerentola" at Lucerne Theatre. She also has a long-standing collaboration with director Oliver Mears, for whose productions of "Macbeth", "Salome", "L’elisir d’amore" and "Don Giovanni" she likewise designed the costumes and sets. Further works include "Candide" in Nancy, "Agrippina" in Limerick, "My Fair Lady" in Karlsruhe and "L’Heure espagnole/Gianni Schicchi" (directed by Bruno Ravella) at the Opéra National de Lorraine. With Ted Huffman she collaborated, among other projects, in Frankfurt on "Rinaldo", in Cologne on "Salome", in Montpellier on "Le Songe d’une nuit d’été", at Deutsche Oper Berlin on "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" and in Zurich on "Madama Butterfly". She also designed the costumes for "Pagliacci/Cavalleria rusticana" in Amsterdam (directed by Robert Carsen), for "La traviata" at the Komische Oper Berlin (directed by Nicola Raab) and for "Osud" at the Janáček Brno Festival (directed by Robert Carsen). Franck Evin

Franck Evin, born in Nantes, moved to Paris at the age of 19 to study piano. At night he accompanied singers at the café théâtre Le Connétable and also began to take an interest in lighting. He eventually decided on a combination of music and technology. Thanks to a scholarship from the French Ministry of Culture, he became assistant to the head of lighting at the Opéra de Lyon in 1983. There he worked, among others, with Ken Russell and Robert Wilson. In 1986 he began working as a freelance lighting designer at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and passed the master lighting designer examination in 1993. Particularly close during this period was his collaboration with Werner Schröter and with the conductor Eberhard Kloke. This was followed by productions in, among other places, Nantes, Strasbourg, Paris, Lyon, Vienna, Bonn, Brussels and Los Angeles. From 1995 to 2012 he was artistic director of the lighting department at the Komische Oper Berlin and was responsible there for all new productions. During this time, Andreas Homoki, Barrie Kosky, Calixto Bieito and Hans Neuenfels became especially important collaborators for him. In 2006 Franck Evin was awarded the "OPUS" in the category of lighting design. From the 2012/13 season to 2024/25 he worked as artistic director of the lighting department at Zurich Opera House. In addition to his work in Zurich, he continued to be involved as a guest in international productions, for example at the opera houses in Oslo, Stockholm, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Munich and Graz, as well as at the Opéra Bastille, La Scala in Milan, Teatro La Fenice, Vlaamse Opera and the Bayreuth Festival.

Alice Lapasin Zorzit

Alice Lapasin Zorzit completed her piano studies at the Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Boccherini in Lucca and continued her training at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz, where she graduated with distinction in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in choral conducting. During this time, she gained her first experience in the opera world as a répétiteur at the Landestheater Linz. In 2017 she took part in the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy, and in the 2018/19 season she served as a répétiteur with the Orchestra Academy of the Zurich Opera House. The 2019/20 season brought an engagement as deputy children’s choir director and guest pianist at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. She subsequently moved to the Staatstheater Darmstadt, where she worked from 2020 to 2022 as deputy chorus director and children’s choir director. Alongside her professional development, she continued her academic studies: in 2021 she completed her Master’s degree in conducting and opera coaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, followed in 2022 by a part-time Master’s degree in cultural management (EMAA) at the University of Zurich. As a cultural manager, she was a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Bank Foundation (AMH) and founded the artist agency ArteMIS in 2024. From 2023 to 2025, Alice Lapasin Zorzit was chorus director with conducting duties at the Landestheater Coburg, and in the summer of 2025 she worked as chorus assistant at the Bayreuth Festival. Since January 2026 she has been deputy chorus director at Zurich Opera House.

Pim Veulings

Pim Veulings studierte Tanz an der Universität der Künste in Amsterdam. Er tanzte an den Landestheatern in Linz und Niederbayern, dem Theaterhaus in Stuttgart, dem Wielki Theater in Warschau, der Welsh National Opera und dem Vlaamse Opera en Ballet in Antwerpen. Seit 2015 choreografiert er für Oper, Film, Musical und für zeitgenössische Tanzkompanien. Er arbeitete mit dem Scapino Ballet Rotterdam für La traviata und zusammen mit Floris Visser und der Dutch Touring Opera für Orphée et Eurydice, gefolgt von Manon am Opernhaus Zürich, Madama Butterfly an der Oper Graz, Hercules am Badischen Staatstheater in Karlsruhe und La bohème in Glyndebourne. Mit Ted Huffman arbeitete er für Braunfels' Die Vögel an der Opéra National du Rhin, für L'incoronazione di Poppea in Aix-en-Provence und für Die Zauberflöte an der Oper Frankfurt zusammen. Zu Pim Veulings künftigen Projekten gehört eine neue Choreografie für Orphée et Eurydice an der Nederlandse Reisopera.

Fabio Dietsche

Fabio Dietsche studied dramaturgy at the Zurich University of the Arts as well as cross flute with Maria Goldschmidt in Zurich and with Karl-Heinz Schütz in Vienna. He gained his first experience as a dramaturge in 2012/13 with Xavier Zuber at Konzert Theater Bern, where he accompanied, among others, Matthias Rebstock’s production of "neither" (Beckett/Feldman) at the Berner Reithalle. Since 2013, he has been a dramaturge at the Zurich Opera House, where he completed his studies with the production dramaturgy of Puccini’s "La bohème." There, he has been involved, among others, in the world premieres of Stefan Wirth’s "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and Leonard Evers’ "Odyssee," the chamber opera "Jakob Lenz" by Wolfgang Rihm, and the Swiss premiere of Manfred Trojahn’s "Orest." He has worked with, among others, Robert Carsen, Tatjana Gürbaca, Rainer Holzapfel, Andreas Homoki, Ted Huffman, Mélanie Huber, Barrie Kosky, Hans Neuenfels, and Kai Anne Schuhmacher. He is currently studying cultural management on a part-time basis at the University of Zurich.

Juan Diego Flórez is one of the leading tenors of the present day. Born in 1973 in Lima, he devoted himself early to singing as well as Peruvian folk and pop music. At the age of 17, he began his studies at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Peru and three years later received a scholarship for vocal studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1996, he made his debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro as Corradino in "Matilde di Shabran", followed by his debut at Teatro alla Scala as Le Chevalier Danois in Gluck’s "Armide". Since then, he has been a regular guest at international opera houses such as Teatro Real Madrid, Opéra Garnier, the Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, Sydney Opera House, LA Opera, and the Zurich Opera House. He has released numerous solo albums and opera recordings on CD and DVD, including "Rossini Arias", which was awarded an ECHO Klassik. Among his many honors are the "Gran Cruz de la Orden del Sol", the highest award of the Peruvian state, the title of Austrian Kammersänger, and the Opus Klassik as Singer of the Year 2018. He is also the founder of the project "Sinfonía por el Perú". In recognition of his social engagement, he was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 2012 and received the Crystal Award of the World Economic Forum in 2014.

Brent Michael Smith

Brent Michael Smith is from the USA. He studied voice at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and at the University of Northern Iowa, as well as piano at Hope College in Michigan. He was a finalist in the Queen Sonja International Music Competition (2021) and a semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions (2020), and he has won prizes in various international singing competitions. Additionally, he received scholarships from the Loren L. Zachary Society and the Young Patronesses of the Opera Competition in Miami. In the United States, he sang roles including Zuniga ("Carmen"), Friedrich Bhaer (Mark Adamo’s "Little Women"), and Ashby ("La fanciulla del West") at Michigan Opera, Antonio ("Le nozze di Figaro") at Toledo Opera, Ariodante ("Xerxes") at the Glimmerglass Festival, the Lackey ("Ariadne auf Naxos") at Santa Fe Opera, as well as Celio (Prokofiev’s "The Love for Three Oranges") and Peter Quince ("A Midsummer Night’s Dream") at Opera Philadelphia. In 2020/21, he was a member of the International Opera Studio at the Zurich Opera House and was subsequently admitted to the ensemble the following season. At the Zurich Opera House, he has since appeared as Sparafucile ("Rigoletto"), Raimondo ("Lucia di Lammermoor"), Prince Gremin ("Eugene Onegin"), Friar Laurence ("Roméo et Juliette"), Fafner ("Das Rheingold"), Cesare Angelotti ("Tosca"), and in "Cardillac."

Andrew Moore

Andrew Moore, American bass-baritone from New Jersey, received his training at Rutgers University (Mason Gross School of the Arts) as well as at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 2019 he reached the New England Region Final of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was awarded the Susan Eastman Encouragement Award there. Other important artistic stages included the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco as well as the Santa Fe Opera, where he appeared as an Apprentice Singer in "La bohème", "Così fan tutte" and "Jenůfa", among others. From 2020 to 2022 he was a member of the International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich. He was subsequently taken into the house’s ensemble, of which he has been a member since the 2022/23 season. Here he has since appeared, among others, as Figaro ("Le nozze di Figaro"), Paolo Albiani ("Simon Boccanegra"), Don Fernando ("Fidelio"), De Brétigny ("Manon"), Marullo ("Rigoletto"), Paris ("Roméo et Juliette"), Marchese d’Obigny ("La traviata"), Pritschitsch ("Die lustige Witwe"), Johann ("Werther") as well as Fix ("In 80 Tagen um die Welt"). His most recent international engagements include his debut with the Warsaw Philharmonic as bass soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 as well as his Salzburg debut as Marchese d’Obigny ("La traviata"). In summer 2026 he will appear at the Salzburg Festival as Johann ("Werther"). His repertoire also includes roles such as Leporello ("Don Giovanni"), Publio ("La clemenza di Tito"), Guglielmo ("Così fan tutte") and Rocco ("Fidelio").

Gregory Feldmann studied at the Juilliard School with Elizabeth Bishop, Randall Scarlata, and Sanford Sylvan. At Juilliard Opera, he appeared as Belcore in “L’elisir d’amore”, as Virgil T. in “The Mother of Us All”, and as Guglielmo in “Così fan tutte”. At the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, he sang Almaviva in “Le nozze di Figaro”. As a soloist, he has performed in Fauré’s “Requiem” as well as Handel’s “Israel in Egypt” and “Messiah”. He has a close artistic partnership with pianist Nathaniel LaNasa. In 2019, he won first prize at the “Joy in Singing” International Song Competition and in 2021, first prize at the “Gerda Lissner” Song/Lieder Competition. In 2022, he was a Young Artist at the Glimmerglass Festival. From 2022 to 2024, he was a member of the International Opera Studio at Zurich Opera House, where he appeared in productions including “Roberto Devereux”, “Don Pasquale”, “Serse”, “Jakob Lenz”, “Sweeney Todd”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and “Carmen”. Together with pianist Nathaniel LaNasa, he has given song recitals at Wigmore Hall in London, at the September Festival: Royaumont in Viarmes (FR), and at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Anthony León

The Cuban-Colombian tenor Anthony León studied at La Sierra University in Riverside (California) as well as at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston (Massachusetts). He has been honored with numerous prestigious awards. In 2024, he was a finalist of the Rising Star Award of the International Opera Awards and received the Richard Tucker Career Grant. In 2023, he won the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition; at Operalia 2022, he was awarded First Prize as well as the Don Plácido Domingo Ferrer Zarzuela Prize. In addition, he received a Career Development Grant from the Sullivan Foundation and was portrayed, among others, in "Opera News". In the 2025/26 season, he makes his house and role debut at the Teatro Regio di Torino as Belmonte in "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" and also sings this role for the first time at Glyndebourne. In addition, he makes his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Ferrando in "Così fan tutte" and returns to the LA Opera, where he sings Fenton in "Falstaff" for the first time. His repertoire also includes roles such as Count Almaviva in "Il barbiere di Siviglia", Remendado in "Carmen", Nemorino in "L’elisir d’amore", Tamino in "Die Zauberflöte", Don Ottavio in "Don Giovanni" and Spoletta in "Tosca". From 2022 to 2023, he was a member of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program of the Los Angeles Opera. Guest engagements have taken him, among others, to the Cologne Opera, to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, to the Santa Fe Opera, to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence as well as to the Salzburg Festival.

Irène Friedli

Irène Friedli grew up in Räuchlisberg, Switzerland, and completed her studies at the Basel Music Academy with a soloist diploma. The alto furthered her training in the interpretation class of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin, attended masterclasses with Brigitte Fassbaender, and studied with Helen Keller. She has won numerous awards at international song competitions. Since 1994, she has been a member of the ensemble at the Zurich Opera House. Here, she has sung roles including Second and Third Lady ("The Magic Flute"), Mercédès ("Carmen"), the title role in Ravel’s "L’Enfant et les sortilèges," Elsbeth ("Schlafes Bruder"), Lily ("Harley"), Annina and Flora ("La traviata"), Flosshilde ("Das Rheingold," "Götterdämmerung"), Marcellina ("Le nozze di Figaro"), Emilia ("Otello"), Lucia ("Cavalleria rusticana"), Olga in Peter Eötvös’ "Drei Schwestern," Marthe (Gounod’s "Faust"), Margret ("Wozzeck"), Lovis in Jörn Arnecke’s "Ronja Räubertochter," Flower Maiden and Voice from Above ("Parsifal"), Gertrud/Crone ("Hänsel und Gretel"), Clotilde ("Norma"), Mother/Other Mother ("Coraline"), Card Dealer ("Arabella"), and Nurse ("Boris Godunow"). In the world premiere of the family opera "Odyssee," she portrayed Eurycleia/Mother, and in "Girl with a Pearl Earring" she sang Tanneke. In 2012, she appeared at the Opéra Bastille in Paris. Evan Gray

Evan Gray is a Swiss bass-baritone from Winterthur. He began his musical training as a treble with the Zürich Boys’ Choir and later transitioned to the bass voice. After initial vocal studies at the Winterthur Conservatory, he continued his education at the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. His roles to date include the Forester ("Das schlaue Füchslein"), Figaro ("Le nozze di Figaro"), and Leporello ("Don Giovanni"). As an accomplished recitalist, he has performed Schubert’s "Winterreise" and Vaughan Williams’ "Songs of Travel" multiple times and has collaborated with artists such as Julius Drake and Robert Holl. From 2023 to 2025, he was a guest at the Marlboro Music Festival, where he developed a close artistic relationship with pianist Mitsuko Uchida, who has invited him back for the summer 2026 edition. Since the 2025/26 season, Evan Gray has been a member of the International Opera Studio at the Zürich Opera House.

Samuel Wallace

Samuel Wallace is from Brazil, where he studied singing with Lício Bruno. In 2024, he received a scholarship from the Mozarteum Brasileiro and subsequently participated in Rolf Beck’s International Choir Academy in Lübeck. During this time, he gave concerts in Germany as well as at the Philharmonie de Paris under Raphaël Pichon. His operatic repertoire includes roles such as Tamino ("The Magic Flute") and the title role in Guilherme Bernstein’s opera "Serafim und der Ort, an dem man nicht stirbt." In 2024, he performed Dorvil in Rossini’s "La scala di seta" and participated in the Gala Lírica of the 13th Tenor Meeting of Brazil at the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus. He was a semifinalist at the Paris Opera Competition, a finalist at the Maria Callas Competition, and a prizewinner in the Joaquina Lapinha and Natércia Lopes singing competitions. Since 2025/26, he has been a member of the International Opera Studio at the Zurich Opera House.

Chor der Oper Zürich

Der Chor der Oper Zürich bildet mit seinen 60 festangestellten Mitgliedern und der Mitwirkung von bis zu 160 Vorstellungen pro Saison einen wesentlichen Eckpfeiler des künstlerischen Ensembles am Opernhaus Zürich. Er vereinigt unter dem Dach des traditionsreichsten schweizerischen Opernhauses Sängerinnen und Sänger auf höchstem professionellen Niveau, deren musikalische und stilistische Versiertheit sich mit darstellerischer Gestaltungskraft und spontaner Spielfreude verbinden. Regelmässig stellen seine Mitglieder auch als Solisten ihr künstlerisches Format unter Beweis. Der Chor spiegelt in seiner internationalen Zusammensetzung den Anspruch und die Strahlkraft der Oper Zürich wieder, die sich durch zahlreiche DVD-Aufnahmen erwiesen haben und 2104 mit dem Preis der «Opera Company of the Year» ausgezeichnet wurden. Wichtige musikalische Impulse erhielten die Chormitglieder durch die Arbeit mit Dirigenten wie Nello Santi, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Franz Welser-Möst, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Chailly, Valery Gergiev, Daniele Gatti, Zubin Mehta und Fabio Luisi. Ihre schauspielerischen Fähigkeiten entwickelten sie im Dialog mit Regisseuren wie David Pountney, Robert Wilson, Harry Kupfer, Peter Stein, Peter Konwitschny oder Andreas Homoki. Gastspiele führten den Chor nach Tokio (Der Rosenkavalier und La traviata), London (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tannhäuser, Der fliegende Holländer), Paris (La cenerentola, Fierrabras), Athen (Carmen, Idomeneo) oder nach Rom, wo er anässlich einer Papstmesse zur Feier des 500-jährigen Bestehens der Schweizer Garde Mozarts Krönungsmesse aufführte. Als «International Chamber Vocalists» wirkte der Chor der Oper Zürich in der 2014 mit einem Echo-Preis ausgezeichneten Neueinspielung von Vincenzo Bellinis Norma mit.

Statistenverein am Opernhaus Zürich

Der Statistenverein am Opernhaus Zürich wurde im Jahr 1900 gegründet und dürfte damit einer der traditionsreichsten Vereine auf dem Kulturplatz Zürich sein. Rund hundert Frauen und Männer im Alter von 16 bis 70 Jahren bereichern das Bühnengeschehen in zahlreichen Inszenierungen.Statisten, früher auch als Figuranten bezeichnet, haben generell nicht sprechende Rollen. Ihre Einsätze am Opernhaus Zürich fallen je nach Inszenierung unterschiedlich umfangreich aus. Während früher Massenszenen im Vordergrund standen, sind die Statistinnen und Statisten seit der Ära Pereira und der Intendanz von Andreas Homoki zunehmend auch für aufwändigere Einzelauftritte sowie für anspruchsvolle technische Einsätze gefragt. Die Mitglieder des Statistenvereins üben ihre Einsätze in der Freizeit und ohne finanzielle Interessen aus. Sie bringen Begeisterung für Musik und Theater mit.

Abstract

Roméo and Juliette are outsiders in a world of rigid social conventions. In Charles Gounod’s French opera they meet at a ball: Juliette introduces herself with a life-affirming waltz aria, while Roméo has slipped in with friends. From this fleeting moment arises love at first sight – and the beginning of a story as passionate as it is fateful. The American director Ted Huffman focuses on the essentials and sets the action on a simple dance floor. In doing so, he once again proves himself a "fine draughtsman of gestures, moods and glances" (NZZ). The lovers are portrayed by the young Armenian soprano Juliana Grigoryan and the star tenor Juan Diego Flórez.

Synopsis

Act One
A ball at the Capulets'. The host opens the party and presents his daughter Juliette. Members of the Montagues, who are enemies of the Capulets, are secretly also at the ball. Roméo is tormented by dark premonitions. His friend Mercutio tries to cheer him up. Roméo sees Juliette for the first time and falls in love. Juliette, who is cared for by her nurse Gertrude, dreams of a happy future. Roméo and Juliette meet and kiss. Tybalt joins them and recognises the voice of Roméo, who quickly hides. Roméo and Juliette realise that their love is impossible. The Capulets have become aware of the Montagues’ presence. When the situation threatens to escalate, the Montagues leave the ball.

Act Two
Under the cover of night, Roméo, full of hope, awaits Juliette. The two meet and reaffirm their love. They want to renounce the names of their hostile fathers. When they are interrupted by Capulets searching for enemy men, Roméo hides. Reunited with her lover, Juliette agrees to marry him if he truly loves her. The two delay parting.

Act Three
Roméo confesses his love for Juliette to Friar Laurent. His lover appears and the friar agrees to marry them.

In search of his friend Roméo, the young Stéphano goads the Capulets. A scuffle ensues with Grégorio. Mercutio wants to protect Stéphano. Roméo intervenes and is insulted by Tybalt. When Roméo does not respond with violence, Mercutio fights Tybalt and is killed. Filled with pain over this loss, Roméo takes revenge and kills Tybalt. The Prince banishes Roméo and calls on the enemy houses to make peace.

Act Four
As day gradually dawns, Roméo and Juliette are united on their wedding night. As the
groom finally takes his leave, Gertrude announces the arrival of Juliette's father. Followed by Father Laurent, Capulet tells his daughter that she is to marry Pâris. Juliette turns to the Friar in despair. He gives her a potion to make her sink into a death-like sleep until Roméo returns. Plagued by wild delusions, Juliette convinces herself to take the potion. Juliette's father finds his daughter, who collapses as if dead.

Act Five
Roméo appears at the grave of Juliette, whom he believes to be dead. He kisses her one last time and drinks poison. Juliette awakens. For a moment, the lovers believe they can escape and live together. When Juliette learns that Roméo has drunk poison, she stabs herself. Before they die, they ask God for forgiveness.
