Abstract
Giacomo Puccini succeeded in creating one of the most effective works for the opera stage with his opera about four young bohemian men dreaming of artistic success and great love. Norwegian director Ole Anders Tandberg earnestly examines La bohème as an opera about artists, relocating it to the milieu of his own homeland, awash with strong imagery and surreal fantasy. On the modest stage of a provincial theater, a young artist’s poetic big-city dreams come to life. Too late, however, Rodolfo realizes the bitter truth: Mimì isn’t just a muse, but a woman who needs real love and attention. Puccini’s score contains some of his most popular melodies, including Rodolfo and Mimì’s arias «Che gelida manina» und «Mi chiamano Mimì», and Musetta’s «Quando me’n vo’» waltz. Appearing as Mimì for this revival is Olga Kulchynska, who previously bowed as Musetta in this same production. Zurich audiences will recognize her as Giulietta in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. The young lyric tenor Kang Wang, who trained as a member of the Metropolitan Opera’s Young Artists Program in New York, makes his debut at the Opernhaus as Rodolfo.
