Abstract
The revival of this operatic double feature of Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci boasts an impressive cast. The charismatic and vocally stunning Latvian Elīna Garanča, one of the most sought-after opera singers in the world, will appear in the dramatic role of Santuzza. Internationally acclaimed Argentinian tenor Marcelo Álvarez takes on the challenge of singing both Turiddo and Canio in one night. Rounding out this glittering cast are George Petean as Alfio/Tonio and Russian soprano Ekaterina Bakanova as Nedda. Conductor Paolo Carignani will ensure Italianate flavor from the podium of the Philharmonia.
Both of these short verismo operas deal with wounded honor, betrayal, jealousy, and deadly hatred. They are both set in hot-blooded southern Italy, in isolated worlds ruled by traditional values. In Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, passions ignite on Easter Sunday in the village where Santuzza, Turiddu, and his lover, Lola, are all confined. With a bite of his ear, Turrido challenges Alfio to a duel, one that Turrido won’t survive.
Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci is set in the small cosmos of a traveling circus troupe. The «Commedia» on stage turns deadly serious. The lines between theater and reality are blurred: on the open stage, Canio the clown stabs his unfaithful wife and her lover.
