Extensions, a new GMD and a new «Ring» after 20 years
Andreas Homoki, intendant and artistic director of Zurich Opera House, will remain in his position until 2025. The announcement that his contract had been extended for an additional three years by the Opernhaus Zürich Board of Directors was made on Monday, July 2 at a press conference. Ballet director Christian Spuck’s contract extension (also until 2025) was also announced. Both have been responsible for the Opernhaus Zürich’s artistic profile since 2012.
Music Director Fabio Luisi will devote himself to new endeavors starting in 2021. In a mutually agreed upon decision, Luisi will leave his post at the Opernhaus Zürich a year earlier than planned, in order to provide his successor with ample time for artistic design and planning. Andreas Homoki presented renowned conductor Gianandrea Noseda as the new General Music Director starting with the 2021/22 season.
In the last year, Noseda appeared at the helm of the Philharmonia Zürich as music director of the new production of Prokofiev's The Fiery Angel, as well as for the revival of Verdi's Macbeth. In both productions, he inspired audiences, the media, and musicians alike.
A new production of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is planned for the final phase of Andreas Homoki’s artistic directorship. The tetralogy has accompanied the Opernhaus Zürich ever since its opening. The first complete Ring cycle in the city on the Limmat appeared from 1891 to 1897. The most recent Ring cycle was created in 2000 and 2002 under the musical direction of Franz Welser-Möst, in a production by Robert Wilson.
Andreas Homoki and Gianandrea Noseda’s interpretation – their first collaboration – will be the eighth Ring cycle presented at the Opernhaus Zürich.

I am just as pleased that my ballet director, Christian Spuck, has declared his willingness to continue his extraordinarily successful work with the Ballet Zürich.

To be appointed the next General Music Director is a great honor. Gianandrea Noseda is one of the world’s most sought-after conductors, equally recognized
for his artistry in both the concert hall and opera house.
Gianandrea Noseda was named the National Symphony Orchestra’s seventh music director in January 2016 and began his tenure with the 2017–18 season. He also serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Orquestra de Cadaqués, and Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival in Italy.
As Music Director of the Teatro Regio Torino from 2007 until 2018, Noseda ushered in what is now considered a golden age for the company, taking it from provincial to global recognition as one of Italy’s most important cultural ambassadors. Noseda’s vision brought the company international acclaim for its productions, recordings, film projects and tours to the most acclaimed international concert halls, festivals and opera houses including Carnegie Hall, Dresden Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Mariinsky Theatre, Royal Opera House (Oman), Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Théâtre des Champs Elysées and the Wiener Konzerthaus.
In addition to twelve weeks with the National Symphony Orchestra and bringing the orchestra to Carnegie Hall in May 2019, highlights of Noseda’s 2018–2019 season include the continuation of his multi-year traversal of the complete Shostakovich Symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra, the recordings of which are being released on LSO Live beginning in September 2018. He also returns to the Metropolitan Opera to lead performances of a new production of Adriana Lecouvreur featuring Anna Netrebko, which receives its premiere at the New Year’s Eve Gala on December 31, 2018.
Noseda has led performances with the most important orchestras and at the leading opera houses and festivals including the Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, La Scala, Munich Philharmonic, Met Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Salzburg Festival, Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony and Zurich Opera House.
The institutions where he has had significant roles include the BBC Philharmonic which he led from 2002–2011; the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra where the Victor de Sabata Chair was created for him as principal guest conductor; and the Mariinsky Theatre, which appointed him its first-ever foreign principal guest conductor in 1997, a position he held for a decade. He was Principal Guest Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic from 1999 to 2003 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI from 2003 to 2006.
Noseda has a cherished relationship with the Metropolitan Opera dating back to 2002. In the 2016–2017 season he conducted a new production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, which received its premiere at the New Year’s Eve Gala; he also led a critically acclaimed new production of Les pêcheurs de perles which premiered at the New Year’s Eve Gala in 2015. His widely praised 2013–2014 season interpretation of Prince Igor, for which he and director Dmitri Tcherniakov fashioned a new version, is available on DVD from Deutsche Grammophon.
Noseda’s intense recording activity counts more than 60 CDs, many of which have been celebrated by critics and received awards. His Musica Italiana project, which he initiated more than ten years ago, has chronicled under-appreciated Italian repertoire of the 20th century and brought to light many masterpieces. Conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra Teatro Regio Torino he has also recorded opera albums with celebrated vocalists such as Ildebrando d’Arcangelo, Rolando Villazon, Anna Netrebko, and Diana Damrau.
The next generation of artists are important to Noseda and his work with them manifests itself in masterclasses and tours with youth orchestras, including the European Union Youth Orchestra.
A native of Milan, Noseda is Cavaliere Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, marking his contribution to the artistic life of Italy. In 2015, he was honored as Musical America’s Conductor of the Year, and was named the 2016 International Opera Awards Conductor of the Year. In December 2016 he was privileged to conduct the Nobel Prize Concert in Stockholm.
