New production
Le nozze di Figaro
Published in Paris shortly before the French Revolution, the play Der tolle Tag oder Die Hochzeit des Figaro (The Mad Day, or the Marriage of Figaro) caused a scandal. The comedy poked fun at the state of things at the time: an arbitrary and amoral nobility, a corrupt judiciary, and a mendacious political elite. This explosive, politically-charged work caught Mozart’s attention in Vienna. Together with his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, he set to work in defiance of the threat of censorship. The result: Le nozze di Figaro is one of the most inspiring, brilliant, and profound operas in all of music history. The director for our new production will examine the opera – and its aggressive men, confident women, and pervasive sexual desire – and its relevance and suitability for the present day.
